The Setup
The gifted kid disappeared into a uniform.
He was told he could be anything. Then he was told to be useful. Get the skill. Get the job. Save. Don’t risk. Trade your hours for wage. So the one thing everyone kept pointing at, the thing he did without thinking, got filed under “anyone could do that.”
And stayed filed. For twenty years.
That is the buried self. Not the person with nothing in them. The person standing inside the “thing and unable to see it”, because it has always been there. Like a fish asking where the water is.
This lesson is for the version of you who almost stayed buried. It answers one question: what do you do when everyone says you have a calling and you cannot see it?
TEACH
The tell is what you dismiss.
There is a pattern in how gifted people describe their gifts. They say it in a shrug.
“That’s just talking to people.”
“That’s just being organised.”
“That’s just noticing what’s wrong.”
Hear the word. Just.
If something comes to you easily, you assume it has no value. Real talent, you were told, is supposed to hurt. Supposed to take a decade. Supposed to strain. 10,000 hours. So natural becomes a synonym for worthless, and the thing everyone else can already see is the thing you look straight past.
That is backwards.
The Rule, borrowed and bent to fit: people don’t buy products, they buy outcomes.
And the outcome you produce most effortlessly is usually the one only you produce in that exact way. Ease is not the absence of skill. Ease is the sign the skill is so deep it has gone quiet.
The philosophy underneath it
The playing field out in the real world tells you a calling is something out there, waiting to be earned. Something you have to become qualified for first. The Heroes Journey. That is the weather lie, and it sells a thousand conditional paths that bury you deeper.
The truth is actually the opposite. You do not find a calling by looking out there. You notice it by hearing what the people around you have already said.
Now this is not new thinking. It is very old thinking, dressed plainly.
The Stoics called it living according to your nature: the work of figuring out what you are fitted for, not what you wish you were. The Buddha pointed at the same thing from a different door: the finger is not the moon, and the thing you chase is not the thing you carry.
The Christian water I drink from says it straight. The kingdom is within you. Not out there. Not earned. Within.
Three traditions, one point. The gift is sat there, waiting for you to notice is, so stop looking elsewhere.
The framework to carry
Right, so you are not looking for something out there. What do we do with that?
Ask it as a system, in this order:
The shrug. What do you say “but that’s just…” about?
The ask. What do people keep coming to you for, without being paid?
The ease. What do you do well while half your attention is elsewhere?
The ache. What makes you quietly angry when it is done badly?
Four quadrants. Draw them. Where they overlap is not necessarily what you should charge money for tomorrow. It is the evidence trail pointing at the thing you carry.
COACH
Sit beside me. I am going to watch you do this, because most people talk themselves out of it in the first sixty seconds. (don’t click away….)
You read the four quadrants and your brain just did two things. First, it named a real answer. Then, immediately, it disqualified it: “but everyone can do that.”
There it is. The flinch. That disqualification is the sign you are on the right thing, not the wrong one.
Let me correct the specific thing in front of you.
When you say “everyone can do that,” you are not making an observation about the world. You are reciting the cage. The same sentence the 20-something in me while running successful stores believed. The same sentence that buried the gifted kid. You are agreeing with the field before the field even has to ask.
Try this. Say out loud the thing you “just” do. Now put the word still in front of it.
I still help people feel calm in a room.
I still solve the problem everyone else is stuck on.
I still know what to say when someone is lost.
That is not nothing.
The Three Whys, aimed at yourself: ask why you doubt it. Then ask why that matters. Then ask why it keeps being true. Somewhere in the third why, you will hit the thing you have been burying. That is the one.
Do not skip this by writing ten polite answers. Write the first one. The one you flinched at. That is the only one that counts.
EXERCISE
Do this with a pen. Grab a piece of paper. The body has to be involved or it stays a nice idea.
Step 1. Draw the four quadrants. Fill them honestly. Do not edit for size. The small one counts as much as the large one.
Step 2. Underneath, write the sentence you most resist: “I have nothing of use to give, because anyone could do what I do.”
Step 3. Now write its antidote, in your own words, starting with “I carry...” Not what you might carry someday. What you carry now. Three items maximum. Short. Specific.
Step 4. Read it aloud. To a wall, to a friend, to a mirror. Hear it come out of your mouth.
Step 5. Circle the one item that made your stomach drop when you wrote it. That is the one you have been pretending is nothing. That is your evidence. Well done!
APPLY
Now go into the real world. This week.
The ask: find one person who knows you, someone who has seen you work or live. Ask them one honest question: “What do you think I make look easy?”
Do not argue with the answer. Do not explain it away. Just write it down, exactly as they said it, before you sleep.
Bring it back. Because here is the thing I have seen twenty years straight: head knowledge degrades. Applied knowledge becomes identity. The answer they give you will almost certainly be the thing you have been dismissing for a decade. And when you see it in someone else’s words, the lie loses its grip.
That is step one on the arc. Not knowing how to sell it. Not pricing it. Not positioning it. Just seeing that it is real, and that it is yours.
Keep it Simple, Stupid.
The Closing Declaration
You already know what you were born with. You need to stop calling it nothing.
Say it.
I carry something real. I am not broken. What comes easy to me is proof I am positioned, not proof I am worthless.
Let me know how you get on in the comments below.
Know what you carry. That comes first. Everything else is downstream. Only then can you Know your value, then sell it.
